The city is a front, and heritage is a line of fierce battles – in fact not just in Bulgaria and not from today. How can we use architecture as a tool to talk about contemporary social change? How can we conserve heritage and identity during dynamic political and economic fluctuations?

On 22 May 2023 a full house at Goethe-Institut Bulgarien saw Aneta Vasileva, Emilia Kaleva, and Zekie Emin of New Architectural Heritage Foundation discuss urban activism, heritage, politics, and architecture, and draw comparisons across three countries – Germany, Bulgaria, and Turkey. Which highrise is more preposterous – Süzer Plaza in Istanbul or ‘Zlaten vek’ in Sofia? The fate of which ‘palace of the people’ ignites most aggressive culture wars – Atatürk Kültür Merkezi in Istanbul or Palast der Republik / Stadtschloss / Humboldt Forum in Berlin? All of this alongside the key topic of communication and conservation of heritage today.
